Leicester City club name

Leicester City have adopted two club names since the Foxes were first formed. The founding fathers of the East Midlands outfit initially created the team under the name ‘Leicester Fosse Football Club’. But financial issues later saw a new company take the club over to survive and renamed them ‘Leicester City Football Club’. The Foxes have kept their tweaked name since.

Founded as: Leicester Fosse FC (1884-1919)

Named changed: Leicester City FC (1919-present)

Nickname: The Foxes

Leicester City founding year

Back in 1884, a bible class at Emmanuel Chapel on New Park Street in Leicester discussed whether they should create a football club. They also took inspiration for the name ‘Leicester Fosse FC’ from where the class was located in the town; The Fosse Way.

The founders of the club formed a committee and to enter, you had to pay 9p. You also had to pay an extra 9p to play. Leicester also played their first-ever match in the year they were founded. The game was played in November 1984 and saw the club beat Syston Fosse 5-0.

Throughout Leicester City’s history, the Foxes have so far played at four stadiums. The first site Leicester called home was The Racecourse. They also shared Victoria Park with rugby team Leicester Tigers and played at Filbert Street before moving to the King Power Stadium.
