Ruud van Nistelrooy could face former Man United teammate in next Leicester City game

Ruud van Nistelrooy could be in line for a reunion with an old Manchester United teammate in his next game in charge as Leicester City boss.

Attention turns to Sunday’s game against Wolves following the Foxes’ heavy 4-0 defeat away at Newcastle United.

It was the first defeat of the Van Nistelrooy era and arguably the worst performance of the season from Leicester too.

Defeat leaves the side 17th, two points clear of the bottom three after fellow relegation rivals Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town picked up wins.

There were also two managerial casualties this weekend as Russell Martin was sacked by Southampton and Gary O’Neil was relieved of his duties by Wolves.

They will hope to have a replacement in before their trip to the King Power Stadium and one man linked with the vacancy at Molineux has previous history with Van Nistelrooy.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer linked with Wolves job

One of the early favourites for the job is former Man United striker and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian has emerged as one of the front-runners for the job and was spotted at Molineux for O’Neil’s final game in charge.

Solskjaer has been out of work since being sacked by Man United in 2021 as he patiently plots his return to management.

It’s more likely that he was there to cheer on Kieran McKenna, who was part of his coaching staff at Old Trafford.

If he was to be appointed though, his first game in charge could be up against Van Nistelrooy.

The pair played together at Man United between 2001 and 2006, where the Red Devils enjoyed plenty of success.

Leicester City face must-win fixture before Christmas

Sunday will be the final game before the festive period and perhaps Leicester’s most important of the season.

There is currently a four-point gap between the Foxes and Wolves while there is only two to 18th-placed Ipswich.

Leicester’s next two games after this weekend see them face Liverpool and Manchester City – both games you wouldn’t expect to see the Foxes win.

Three points before those two games would be vital to not only creating extra breathing room between themselves and their relegation rivals, but also provide a confidence boost going into two of the toughest games of the season.
