Emile Heskey tells Leicester board what they need to improve on after ‘unrealistic’ Premier League approach

Leicester City sit 19th in the Premier League, and baring a miracle, the Foxes look set for relegation back down to the Championship.

It’s been a nightmare season for the King Power Stadium side, who have lost 12 of their last 13 league games and have failed miserably in their attempt to clinch Premier League survival two years after their shock demotion to the second tier in 2023.

Although Leicester won praise from Marc Cucurella for their change of shape against Chelsea on the weekend, Ruud van Nistelrooy might have left things too late for the Foxes, who currently sit six points off safety in the league.

And former Leicester striker Emile Heskey has now highlighted one issue at Leicester that has led to their underwhelming season back in the Premier League this term.

Emile Heskey blames Leicester’s recruitment for disasterous season

Speaking to PA News, the former England international shared his thoughts on how Leicester’s lack of quality investment and relying too much on players from last season has led to the Foxes standing still rather than moving forward.

Leicester made just one January signing after an unremarkable summer transfer window, and Heskey believes a poor recruitment drive has been a big reason behind this season being as disastrous as it has been.

Heskey said about Leicester’s lack of quality signings: “If you can’t invest in the team and can’t add to what you’ve got, it will be very difficult to go into the Premier League. If you look at the teams you’re playing against, they are top teams.

“I would say most of them could play in the Champions League and beat most of them. To think we can come in with the same squad and same bunch of players and survive is unrealistic. You need to improve, add to the squad and a bit of experience of what it means to stay in this league.”

Leicester need to learn the right lessons from failed Premier League return

After a summer of less than exciting signings and a questionable appointment in Steve Cooper to replace Enzo Maresca, Leicester fans can be forgiven in thinking that their club have taken the wrong approach in virtually every key decision.

And heading into next season, likely in the Championship, the Foxes needed to ensure they have learned the right lessons going into the new campaign, where a new philosophy and approach has to be forged to ensure a Premier League comeback can be executed and maintained.

Indeed, Van Nistelrooy’s tenure at Leicester is likely to end if the Foxes are relegated, and it will be up to the board to identify the perfect long-term manager for the King Power Stadium side going into the future.
