Five Leicester City stars are at risk of facing a one-match suspension due to a rule imposed by the Premier League.

This season has been a turbulent one for the Foxes, who finally ended their wait for a first league win of the 2024/25 campaign against Bournemouth last weekend thanks to Facundo Buonanotte’s first-half goal.

Leicester have been in some physical battles this season and by doing so, have collected plenty of yellow cards.

13 players have picked up yellow cards so far, with Wilfred Ndidi collecting the most having picked up three.

Four other players (Jordan Ayew, Buonanotte, Oliver Skipp, and Jamie Vardy) have also picked up two yellow cards this season, and are at risk.

But what are the rules and why are these five players at risk of being suspended? We’ve got that all covered right here.

What is the Premier League’s yellow card rule?

In the Premier League, players who collect five yellow cards receive an automatic one-match suspension.

This only applies to league games, meaning that should a Carabao Cup or FA Cup fixture fall in between a league game, the player in question would be able to play.

If one of the five Leicester stars in question were to go on and pick up 10 yellow cards, a two-match suspension would be handed out.

In even more unlikely circumstances, 15 yellow cards would be a three-match suspension and 20 could result in a misconduct charge from the FA.

At the time of writing, the most yellow cards awarded in a Premier League season is 14, which were awarded to former Fulham player, Joao Palhinha.

When does the Premier League yellow card limit reset?

Thankfully for the five Leicester players at risk, the yellow card rule resets after the first 19 games of the season.

This means that players can receive a total of four yellow cards throughout the first half of the season before avoiding a suspension.

Meanwhile, players who receive 10 bookings before the 33rd matchday of the season will be punished with a two-game suspension.

This is less likely though as most players do not earn 10 yellow cards throughout a league campaign.
