Foxes ‘step up’ interest in Swansea talisman

Joel Piroe looks increasingly likely to leave Swansea City this summer and Leicester City appear to be making a march for his signature ahead of their competitors.

Everton and fellow Championship outfit Southampton have also expressed an interest in securing the services of Piroe. According to WalesOnline, however, it is the Foxes who have made an approach for the Dutch forward this week alongside Serie A outfit Atalanta.

The two clubs have reportedly stepped up their interest as they prepare for a battle over the 23-year-old’s services.

Southampton are said to be ‘keeping tabs’ on the situation, whereas the Toffees were linked with a possible swap deal for the forward including Ellis Simms. Coventry City have now snapped up Simms, however, so that may leave Everton out of the equation for now.

Piroe has scored 41 goals over the course of the last two Championship campaigns, in which he has made 88 appearances for the Swans.

Swansea slapped a £20m price tag on their main man last summer, though heading into the final year of his contract that sum has now likely reduced.

Leicester have money to spend in their first second tier season since 2014, no doubt aided by the £40m raised from James Maddison’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur late last month.

Is Piroe the boost needed?

Harry Winks and Conor Coady were the Foxes’ first two additions this summer as new manager Enzo Maresca looks to shape a squad capable of returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Adding Piroe into that mix would create an extremely solid Championship spine to compliment their already impressive roster at this level.

Swansea have failed to mount any serious promotion push since the forward’s arrival from Eredivisie side PSV in 2021, so if Piroe is wanting to test himself at the highest level then this current Leicester project could be quite the opportunity.
