Leicester City are set to gain a windfall as a result of FIFA’s Club Benefit Programme, which will reward 440 clubs across the globe following the 2022 World Cup.
The Foxes had seven players represent the club in Qatar, and earned over $1.5m (£1.1m) from the fund.
This ranked them ninth out of 46 clubs belonging to the English FA which had players participating in the tournament, placing Leicester above the likes of Brentford, Newcastle and Aston Villa, but below the top six, Brighton and Wolves.
Success in the tournament for the players participating affected how much each club was rewarded per player.
Leicester’s seven representatives were James Maddison, Youri Tielemans, Wout Faes, Timothy Castagne, Daniel Amartey, Papy Mendy, and Danny Ward.
How did Leicester’s players fare in the World Cup?
Perhaps resembling Leicester’s poor season at club level, none of the World Cup representatives shone in Qatar.
The Belgian trio were eliminated in the group stages after a disastrous showing, with Tielemans and Castagne regularly featuring as the side scored just once in three games.
Maddison reached the quarter-finals with England, but watched most of the tournament from the sidelines, with other players being preferred to the midfielder by Gareth Southgate.
Papy Mendy helped Senegal reach the round of 16 and started as his side lost to England after finishing the group stages behind the Netherlands, and he was arguably the biggest success story.
Ward and Amartey both finished bottom of their groups with Wales and Ghana, with neither player impressing over the course of the tournament.
Leicester’s prize money was boosted by having seven players at the tournament, but it could have been higher if any were to reach the latter stages with their national sides. With most of these representatives now leaving the club, it remains to be seen what kind of international representation the Foxes will have in future tournaments.
