How the national media rated Leicester City ace Danny Ward’s display for Wales vs Iceland

Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward was involved in Wales’ 2-2 draw against Iceland in the UEFA Nations League clash on Friday night.

Danny Ward is in a unique position as a player. The Leicester City goalkeeper rarely ever features for his club but he’s first-choice for his nation.

Ward is in a constant battle with towering Dane Mads Hermansen, who has virtually held the number one jersey since arriving in the summer of 2023.

Hermansen has started in every single Premier League game and kept a clean sheet last time out as the Foxes secured their first league win of the season against Bournemouth.

Ward has played twice for Steve Cooper’s men this season, with both games coming in the Carabao Cup. The 31-year-old started in their 4-0 win over Tranmere Rovers and then spared Leicester’s blushes in the penalty shootout win over Walsall.

How Danny Ward fared for Wales vs Iceland

Whilst he was the hero on his last outing for Leicester, he conceded twice against Iceland in the Nations League.

Ward couldn’t prevent Logi Thomasson’s first goal however, he would have been disappointed to concede the second, with Thomasson squeezing an effort in at his near post.

That said, he still enjoyed a decent night between the posts as Wales Online handed him a 6/10 rating. They wrote: “Made some really good saves, but perhaps should have done better with Iceland’s second.”

On the other hand, Sportsdunia must have seen the game differently, handing him a 5.4/10 rating and branding his performance as ‘awful’.

“Had an awful game as the second goal was that he conceded was his own goal. He made only two saves and was only good with his distribution.”

It was a mixed night for Ward and he’ll go back to Leicester with the hope of somehow dislodging Hermansen, although that is highly unlikely.

Leicester City’s upcoming fixtures are vital

The international break perhaps came at the wrong time for the Foxes, who had just clinched a mammoth victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League.

But with three massive games on the horizon against Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town, it’s so important that Cooper gets further points on the board, otherwise, his risk of being sacked increases tenfold.

Following a run of three winnable games, Leicester enter a tricky period, with Manchester United and Chelsea to come in November.

Therefore, targeting their next three as opportunities for points could prove vital in their fight for survival, with their win last time out no doubt a confidence booster.
