Jose Mourinho is one of the best Premier League managers of all time so is very well qualified to discuss who can join him in this elite tier.

Mourinho has won three English top flight titles, all with Chelsea, and has had experience with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Over that time, Mourinho has gone toe-to-toe with some of the other biggest managers in the business.

Joining in 2004, he would replace Claudio Ranieri who of course went on to manage Leicester City.

Ranieri became a Leicester legend as he won the Foxes their first-ever Premier League title in 2016, defying odds of 5000/1.

His remarkable achievement came less than 12 months after he was sacked by Greece for losing to the Faroe Islands.

The Italian’s success at the King Power Stadium will never be forgotten and he had such an effect that Mourinho picked him ahead of two legendary Premier League managers.

Jose Mourinho can’t decide between Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola – picks Claudio Ranieri instead

Mourinho, who Leicester fans wanted after Steve Cooper’s sacking, is now plying his trade in Turkey with Fenerbahce.

The two-time Champions League winner has been around the block and knows his stuff, as proved when he sat down with one of his former Chelsea stars, John Obi Mikel.

Joining him on The Obi One Podcast, the conversation came onto who Mourinho believed was better out of Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola. A fair top given that between the two, they have won 19 Premier League titles and average a win percentage of over 65%.

But, Mourinho couldn’t decide and in the end decided to sing the praises of Ranieri.

“Fergie or Pep? Oh it’s impossible to compare,” he said. “It’s impossible to compare generations. It’s impossible to compare the potential to do things, you know.

“The most legendary one for the Premier League title is Ranieri.

“Winning 5 or 6 trophies with United or City is a great thing, but… When you win with Leicester City there are no ifs or buts. For me it was the most incredible trophy I could see and experience first-hand.”

Claudio Ranieri got revenge on Jose Mourinho with Leicester’s win against Chelsea in 2015

Although there has never been any bad blood between Ranieri and Mourinho, the former certainly wanted to prove a point when his Leicester side faced Chelsea in December 2015.

Ranieri was sacked and replaced by Mourinho at Stamford Bridge in 2003 and when the game at the King Power Stadium came around, things looked different.

Leicester were flying high at the top of the table whereas Chelsea were languishing in middtable.

It was the Foxes who would win on the night, beating Chelsea 2-1 as the dangerous duo of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both scored.

That would prove to be the final game of Mourinho’s second spell in charge of Chelsea as he was sacked just days later.

12 years on from his harsh sacking, Ranieri finally got one over his replacement.
