Ruud van Nistelrooy one name ‘proposed’ for Leicester job
According to The Daily Mail, Leicester are looking to whittle down their potential managerial candidates to a shortlist of three or four names.
Luton Town manager Rob Edwards is reported to have admirers at the King Power Stadium, but former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is a more rogue name that is being considered.
The Daily Mail report states: ‘Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has not worked since leaving PSV Eindhoven, is another name proposed to the Leicester board, who approached Graham Potter in spring 2023 after sacking Brendan Rodgers.’
This would represent a big risk for Leicester given that the Dutchman has only managed one senior side in PSV and his tenure only lasted one season.
Van Nistelrooy did manage to win the Dutch Cup in his solitary year in charge but left under a cloud with rumours of a player revolt being the reason for his departure.
Ruud van Nistelrooy appointment could see two record-breakers meet
If van Nistelrooy is to be appointed Leicester manager it could see him coach the player who broke his Premier League scoring record in Jamie Vardy.
Vardy is currently in discussions with the club about extending his stay following the expiration of his contract this summer and the chance to work with a former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker could be an enticing one even at 37.
In 2015, Vardy scored in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United to take his goalscoring run to 11 consecutive games, beating Van Nistelrooy’s record set across two seasons in 2003.
This run was part of fairytale season in which Leicester beat all the odds to win the Premier League title.
This time round, though, the goal is simply to stay in the division.
