Leicester City are having a season to forget. The Foxes are stuck inside the Premier League’s relegation zone and are the favourites to go down with Ipswich Town and Southampton.

With just 11 games left, time is running out for the 2015-16 title winners, and, as a result, Ruud van Nistelrooy remains a man under pressure.

The Dutchman replaced Steve Cooper in November last year, but his hire has turned out to be a bad decision, and one stat in particular proves it.

Steve Cooper made Leicester City best in Premier League in key area

Cooper didn’t have long in charge of the Foxes. The former Nottingham Forest boss was afforded just 12 matches before being dismissed by the Leicester City owners.

However, despite the club’s struggles at the time, according to BBC Sport, Cooper’s management made Leicester City the best team in the Premier League when it came to their goalscoring substitutes.

The 45-year-old recorded the best subs-to-goal ratio with his 46 in-game changes contributing to four goals.

This record means goals scored by Cooper’s substitutes count for 16% of all Leicester City’s goals this season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy shown changes can work

Very few will argue that Cooper’s dismissal was too soon, but there isn’t anything that can be done now. Questions, however, are being asked over Van Nistelrooy’s reluctance to tweak his system and personnel.

The former PSV manager has stuck with the same players week in, week out, for example, Troy Deeney thinks it’s time for Conor Coady to start more games.

It remains to be seen if the 32-year-old will start for Leicester City against Chelsea on Sunday, though.

Regardless, Cooper’s in-game decisions have proven Leicester City can compete with the best and Van Nistelrooy’s hesitancy to make changes are continuing to cost the side goals, and ultimately, getting more points on the board.
