Former Manchester City and Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero has been confirmed as Leicester City’s new assistant manager as Enzo Maresca shuffles his backroom staff.
The 41-year-old finished his playing career as a backup at Southampton prior to this move, and overall made 36 Premier League appearances across three clubs in England.
Caballero first arrived in England in 2014, joining Manuel Pellegrini’s Man City side from Malaga, and whilst he was mostly a backup at both City and Chelsea, he did have spells ahead of Joe Hart and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Maresca and Caballero’s spells at the Etihad Stadium never actually overlapped, but the Italian has chosen the former Argentina international, whom he played with at Malaga, as his assistant despite his lack of coaching experience.
Leicester are aiming to come straight back up following their surprise relegation, and whilst Caballero may bring a lot of experience in different leagues as a player, there may be question marks that Maresca, a relatively inexperienced manager himself, has not elected for a more experienced coach as his number two.
How is Maresca shaping his backroom team?
Caballero has been recruited as a general assistant rather than a goalkeeping coach, with Michele De Bernardin taking that role, having coached in the role at Parma.
The Italian has brought young coach Danny Walker with him from Man City, who was part of his successful staff as the Blues won the Premier League 2.
There is experience within his staff, with Marcos Alvarez joining as a fitness coach, having performed the role at a number of top clubs including Sevilla and Real Madrid.
Javier Molina Caballero has also joined as an analyst, and it is becoming clear that Leicester want a fresh approach away from the failures of the old regime under Brendan Rodgers and later Dean Smith.
