Leicester City’s situation with PSR is being put under the microscope once more ahead of the 2023/24 accounts being released.
Leicester were charged by the Premier League for breaching spending rules in the three years leading up to the 2022/23 season in 2024.
The PSR case was won by the Foxes at the time however, with their latest accounts soon to be released, their financial troubles have emerged into the spotlight.
As it stands, many reports have suggested that Leicester could face another PSR charge when the financial figures are released next week, potentially putting their Premier League status in jeopardy.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side are currently 19th in the table and two points from safety, although a deduction would plunge them further into the mire.
Van Nistelrooy knew about their financial situation before he signed his contract in November, now explaining what he wanted from the club.
Ruud van Nistelrooy on Leicester City’s PSR situation
The Dutchman, who left his role at Manchester United in November, was aware that PSR would be a potential problem in the transfer window.
He had meetings with owner Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha and director of football Jon Rudkin before signing his contract at the King Power Stadium.
Van Nistelrooy was happy for the club to take charge of the situation but he wanted to be kept informed on how things were being managed internally.
“The most important thing in our conversations before I signed, it was a topic,” van Nistelrooy said as quoted by Leicestershire Live.
“As well, the January window. For me, onwards, especially on the PSR stories, it’s important I know internally how things are being managed. For me, it’s up to the club to communicate this towards the media and then for me to focus on winning games and performances.”

What a points deduction would mean for Leicester City
Leicester’s financial situation is largely out of the manager’s control and he’s just focused on doing business in the window and turning results around on the pitch.
In the January transfer market, Leicester are looking to sign a centre-back at least, as well as a right-back, winger and striker if possible.
However, if the club receives a points deduction for breaching PSR, his efforts to keep the Foxes above water could be in vain.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 16 | 19 | 3 | 8 | 8 | 15 | 25 | -10 | 17 | |
| 17 | 20 | 4 | 4 | 12 | 31 | 45 | -14 | 16 | |
| 18 | 20 | 3 | 7 | 10 | 20 | 35 | -15 | 16 | |
| 19 | 20 | 3 | 5 | 12 | 23 | 44 | -21 | 14 | |
| 20 | 20 | 1 | 3 | 16 | 12 | 44 | -32 | 6 |
Only two points separate his side from escaping the relegation zone but being handed a deduction would significantly reduce their chances of survival and hand them a mountain to climb.
Hopefully, Leicester can avoid a punishment from the Premier League, otherwise, van Nistelrooy has an even bigger job on his hands.
