It’s the Gary Lineker derby this weekend as Leicester City face Everton.

Lineker is adored by both Leicester and Everton fans and he more than anyone will keep a watchful eye over how this one plays out.

The boyhood Leicester fan started his career at the Foxes academy in 1976 before making his first-team debut three years later.

He would spend nine years at Filbert Street, establishing himself as a Leicester legend by winning the Second Division title as well as a run to the FA Cup semi-finals and winning the First Division Golden Boot during his final season at the club.

1985 saw the England international would make the move to Everton and although he only had one season at Goodison Park, remembers his time fondly and even stated that the Toffees were the best club side he played for in his career.

What happened next was a script that almost nobody could write as Lineker made his Everton debut against… Yep, you guessed it, Leicester.

As a result, it led to a rather hilarious but embarrassing moment for the two-club icon.

Gary Lineker accidentally walked into Leicester changing room on Everton debut

Having spent his whole career at his beloved Leicester, the first move away was always going to come with it’s challenge.

Not only was it a step up in quality after joining the reigning champions of the First Division, it was also a change in surroundings.

There would’ve no doubt been a sense of self comfort for Lineker after finding out a return to the East Midlands would be where he made his debut.

However, home comforts may have been too much after the forward admitted he accidentally walked into the Foxes changing room instead of his new side’s by accident.

That wasn’t the worst of it for Lineker though, who ended up on the losing side.

What Leicester fans sang to Gary Lineker on Filbert Street return

Even though he left with everyone’s best wishes, there were some Leicester fans who couldn’t resist poking some fun at Lineker.

Leicester ran out 3-1 winners on the day with Lineker replacement and summer signing Mark Bright scoring two goals.

Speaking to the BBC in 2001, Lineker recalled the “tongue in cheek” stick he received from Foxes fans

“My first game for Everton was actually at Filbert Street. Leicester won 3-1 and my replacement, Mark Bright, scored two fantastic goals, so I got all the ‘What a waste of money’ chants from the home crowd,” he said.

“I got slaughtered when I got home to the in-laws, who were all Leicester fans!”
