Why Leicester fans will actually be relieved at who the referee is for Wolves clash

Leicester City host Wolves in a relegation six-pointer on Sunday as Ruud van Nistelrooy aims to return to winning ways.

Van Nistelrooy tasted his first defeat in the dugout as Leicester were thrashed 4-0 by Newcastle last weekend.

Gary Lineker shared his concerns for Leicester after that defeat, although the Foxes were without three of their star midfielders, Boubakary Soumare, Harry Winks and Wilfred Ndidi.

Winks has been spotted in Foxes training ahead of the clash against Wolves, in what is a huge boost to van Nistelrooy.

The Englishman’s potential return to action isn’t the only reason why supporters can be confident of seeing off Wolves with the refereeing appointment now being announced.

Anthony Taylor will take charge of Leicester vs Wolves

Anthony Taylor is perhaps one of the Premier League’s most controversial referees as many clubs have voiced their displeasure towards him previously.

Taylor has been named as the man in the middle for Leicester’s fixture at home to Wolves on Sunday with Michael Salisbury on VAR duty.

The 46-year-old, who has taken charge of 34 Leicester matches in the past, has also handed supporters a reason to be optimistic ahead of this weekend.

In their impressive comeback win over Southampton in October, Taylor was at the centre of attention when he failed to award the Saints a penalty for a blatant foul on striker Paul Onuachu.

Jordan Ayew tugged Onuachu’s shirt in the box without a spot-kick given but at the other end, substitute Ryan Fraser was sent off for a tug on Jamie Vardy, which VAR deemed a denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

Taylor’s poor decision-making in this match helped Leicester return a two-nil deficit on its head and secure a vital three points on the road.

The last time Taylor refereed Leicester vs Wolves

Ironically, the last time Taylor was appointed to referee this fixture, Leicester were on the right end of a controversial decision in the match.

The Foxes secured a 1-0 victory over Wolves in November 2020 thanks to a contentious Vardy penalty.

It was awarded after Dennis Praet’s cross struck Max Kilman on the hand with Wolves claiming their defender had no time to move his hand out of the way.

So, it’s interesting that a decision went their way in this fixture, and Leicester will be hoping for Taylor to be on their side once more this weekend.
