3 things we learned about Leicester City following Sheffield Wednesday draw

Leicester City were held to a 1-1 draw away at bottom club Sheffield Wednesday tonight.

Top travelled to bottom tonight in what many thought would be a routine win for league leaders Leicester City.

Sheffield Wednesday have won just one game all season and look destined for relegation to League One, but they gave Leicester a tough evening, and many would argue that the deserved the win.

Enzo Maresca‘s side were frustrated all night but remain at the top of the Championship table, now on 43 points but having won just one of their last four games.

A 3-1 win for Leeds United vs Swansea City sees them move to within eight points of the Foxes, and there’s only five points separating Leeds in 3rd and Hull City in 6th.

The chasing pack are certainly catching up, and here we discuss three things we learned about Leicester City after tonight’s game…

Squad depth, but enough quality?

So far this season, a key compliment of Leicester City has been their squad depth.

Maresca has mostly been able to call upon different names in different games and keep things fresh, but tonight’s performance perhaps highlighted that the Foxes don’t have as much quality within their ranks as first thought.

Conor Coady for example came into the line up tonight and didn’t manage to impress, with Yunus Akgun starting but being hooked after an hour, and the same with Cesare Casadei.

Also on this point, a lack of creativity in attack was highlighted tonight with Wednesday recording 14 shots to Leicester’s 12, and with just 32% possession (Sofascore).

And with a lack of creativity up front comes a lack of goals.

Leicester City have put four past the likes of Southampton and Blackburn Rovers this season, but Maresca’s side have scored just three in their last four now.

They were shut out in defeats vs Leeds and Middlesbrough and whilst the win over Watford was comfortable, they were really frustrated tonight.

Sheffield Wednesday have been woeful this season but tonight, they were the better team, keeping Leicester at bay and being unlucky not to have scored more than one.

A long, long way to go

Many Leicester City fans, and many neutrals, were backing the Foxes to go on and win the Championship title with ease this season.

And that might still happen, but if it is to happen then Leiecster need to be much better than they were tonight.

There may well have been an air of complacency within the side after their impressive start, but tonight’s result will drive home the fact that there’s still more than half the campaign to go.

And with the likes of Leeds, West Brom and Southampton keeping the pace, and Ipswich Town still well within the title race, Maresca will be demanding more focus and quality from his side.
