Enzo Maresca should unleash ‘incredible’ Leicester City gem amid double injury blow

Leicester City are still without two of their key strikers, Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho, ahead of the visit of Millwall on Wednesday night.

The Foxes certainly coped well without the attacking duo of Vardy and Iheanacho on Saturday as Enzo Maresca’s side scored four goals in a thumping of Plymouth Argyle.

That emphatic win saw Patson Daka slot home his first goal since March as Leicester preserved their lead at the top of the table.

Although the 25-year-old led the line exceptionally well in that victory, Maresca is still posed with a selection dilemma.

With a jam-packed fixture schedule to come over the festive period and the African Cup of Nations in January, the Italian will lose both Daka to Zambia and Iheanacho to Nigeria.

This means that a replacement is needed and fortunately, youngster Tom Cannon has just returned from a stress fracture in his back and he is fit and raring to go.

The 20-year-old, who arrived from Everton for £7.5 million in the summer, has had a tough time at the King Power so far, however, now could be his chance to shine.

He made his first appearance for the club off the bench on Saturday, replacing Daka with half an hour to go, and he could now push the Zambian for a starting spot.

Why Enzo Maresca needs to unleash Tom Cannon

During his time on loan at Preston North End last term, Cannon was showered with praise after scoring eight goals across a ten-match window between February and April.

This fine form drew plaudits from former striker and current pundit, Dean Ashton, who lauded him as an “incredible” striker.

And it was clear to see why many waxed lyrical over his clinical finishing.

In the Championship last term, he ranked in the top 15% against his positional peers for non-penalty goals per 90, top 21% for successful take-ons and top 14% for carries into the penalty area, as per FBref.

The Englishman was a threat with his pace in behind and possessed the power to bully defenders.

If he can return to that level of form at the King Power, there are several reasons why he can thrive under Maresca.

He’ll be playing with players who can produce quality service for him, he can handle himself physically as a lone striker and has shown a clinical edge when the chances arise having posted a goal-conversion rate of 18% last term, as per Sofascore.

Indeed, Cannon looks tailor-made for this system and although Daka will likely get the nod against Millwall on Wednesday, the youngster could get a long run in the team once AFCON kicks off in January.
