Leicester City are interested in capturing Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill in the January transfer window.

Leicester were linked with the 27-year-old in the summer as he was deemed surplus to requirements by Vincent Kompany, however, talks never materialised further.

The Mirror now report that several clubs, including Wolves, Crystal Palace and Fulham want to acquire the Englishman in a cut price deal for £7 million.

Brownhill’s contract at Turf Moor expires in June which means he would depart the club on a free transfer, though Burnley are believed to have the option of extending it by a further year.

He’s established himself as a key player under Kompany having plundered seven goals and supplied eight assists in 41 Championship appearances last term before becoming an important figure in the Premier League.

Despite their struggles this season, the Clarets captain has still been one of the few key performers in their battle against relegation, scoring three times.

That said, Brownhill could sought to depart Turf Moor in January amid interest from elsewhere with Leicester needing to fend of Premier League clubs to secure his signature.

Josh Brownhill would be a ‘fabulous’ midfield acquisition

Brownhill is currently performing at a high standard in the top flight.

If he was to drop down to the Championship and anticipate that promotion to the Premier League is likely, he could form an excellent partnership in midfield with Harry Winks and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

It would be the perfect blend of technical class, ferocity in the press and boundless quality in the final third.

In the second tier last term, Brownhill played a vital role in Burnley’s title-winning campaign as an all-action midfielder.

Aside from providing Kompany with consistent output – as demonstrated by his WhoScored match rating of 7.27 across the season – he also showcased his technical qualities.

He ranked in the top 8% against his positional peers in the division for shot-creating actions per 90, top 10% for assists, top 13% for touches in the attacking penalty box and top 25% for progressive passes, as per FBref.

As delineated by the above statistics, Brownhill would supply Enzo Maresca with extra quality to unlock defences and provide an added goal threat from midfield.

At times this season, Leicester have struggled to break down low blocks and have often won matches by a one-goal margin.

However, the midfield metronome – who has been dubbed as “fabulous” by Lee Hendrie – could be the final piece needed to complete their promotion puzzle.

He would also be a ready-made replacement for Wilfried Ndidi, who reportedly has interest from Turkish giants, Galatasaray.
