Leicester City have opened talks with Arsenal over the transfer of a player new manager Steve Cooper has previously worked with.

Leicester City are gearing up for the 2024/25 campaign, which sees them back in the Premier League following a one-year stint in the Championship.

In a bid to avoid a swift return to England’s second tier, Leicester owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha has backed the club in the transfer market with four new first-team arrivals already.

Issahaku Fatawu, Caleb Okoli, Michael Golding, and Bobby De Cordova-Reid have all made the move to the King Power on permanent deals.

However, there is still likely to be further reinforcements brought in before the close of the transfer window on August 30th.

Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo has been linked with the Foxes in the last few days.

And now, a fresh name has seemingly caught the eye of new manager, Steve Cooper.

Leicester City want to sign Reiss Nelson from Arsenal

As per Fabrizio Romano, writing on X/Twitter, Leicester have opened talks with Arsenal for Reiss Nelson.

The deal is expected to be an initial loan with an obligation to make it permanent.

The two clubs are currently in talks over the financial terms of the deal, with Leicester confident they can persuade Nelson to join due to his connection to Cooper.

Cooper previously worked as England U17 manager between 2015-19, during which time he managed Nelson.

Speaking about the 24-year-old after the Gunners beat Nottingham Forest in 2022, Cooper labelled Nelson as ‘standout’.

He said: “[Reiss Nelson] and I always had a strong relationship.

“He was a standout player for England U17s. It’s good to see him doing well, I just wish it wasn’t today.”

How Steve Cooper could use Reiss Nelson at Leicester City

Nelson is an Arsenal academy product and has made 89 appearances for their senior side.

However, the Englishman has never been able to hold down a starting berth under Mikel Arteta.

Instead, Nelson has been utilised as a squad player, being deployed on either wing, as a number 10, or in a central midfield role

This versatility could prove useful for Leicester going into the 2024/25 campaign.

Leicester want to strengthen four positions this summer, eyeing a left-back, central midfielder, winger, and striker.

Given Nelson can operate in two of these roles, his signing could be a shrewd bit of business for the Midlands outfit.
