Leicester City to seal permanent Yunus Akgun transfer in coming months due to one clause

Leicester City could be forced into signing Yunus Akgun on a permanent deal if one clause in his contract is triggered.

Yunus Akgun arrived on loan from Turkish giants Galatasaray at the start of the season but has found it difficult to secure regular game-time under Enzo Maresca.

The 23-year-old is an attacking midfielder who likes to operate on the right flank.

Unfortunately, he’s had to battle with the in-form Abdul Fatawu for that position and Maresca has preferred to use the Ghanaian, who has created more big chances in the Championship (23) than any other player.

Subsequently, Akgun has started just five of his 14 matches in the second tier and has struggled to build momentum and truly show the quality he has in his locker.

After all, the Turkish whiz has featured in the Champions League and has previously taken the Super Lig by storm.

During his season on loan at Adana Demirspor in the 2021/22 campaign, Akgun weighed in with an impressive eight goals and 11 assists.

The youngster has since failed to eclipse those heights and while Maresca felt he could unlock his potential at the King Power, a return of just one goal and one assist so far suggests he has struggled.

Nonetheless, there is one condition that could see his move to Leicester become permanent at the end of his loan spell.

The clause in Yunus Akgun’s contract

The clause in Akgun’s contract states that his move can be made permanent for €10m (£8.55m) if he makes 25 appearances for the Foxes.

Akgun is currently on 18 in all competitions which means if he plays seven of Leicester’s final 14 Championship matches, the club will be forced to pay the agreed fee.

Conversely, Maresca can choose to trigger that clause in his contract without him reaching the total number of appearances.

Unfortunately, the Italian is unlikely to go down that avenue, especially when the Foxes are nailed on to be playing Premier League football next season.

Leicester should avoid signing Akgun

Unlike the loan acquisition of Fatawu, who looks set to join Leicester permanently in June, it doesn’t look as though the same fate will play out for Akgun.

Despite showing flashes of his quality, the youngster hasn’t matched the physical demands of Maresca’s system.

The Leicester boss wants his players to be pressing machines, capable of penning the opposition in their half while praying on their mistake.

Akgun doesn’t tick the above boxes and is yet to prove he could make the top flight step up, meaning they should save their money and avoid purchasing the Turkish ace.
