One Southampton factor makes it very difficult for Steve Cooper to prepare Leicester City

Steve Cooper could make it back-to-back Premier League wins for Leicester City against Southampton on Saturday.

The divisive Leicester City manager has the unenviable task of winning over the Foxes faithful and went some way to starting to do that with a first league win last match.

Steve Cooper has spent the international break devising a plan to back up that 1-0 win over Bournemouth with victory over Southampton and needs his players to put that into action at St Mary’s.

Southampton have just one point this season and Leicester should be looking to capitalise on a Saints side low on confidence.

Steve Cooper does not know what formation Southampton will play

The international break has given Cooper plenty of time to prepare for Southampton, but the fact 13 of his Leicester players have been away won’t have helped.

In studying Southampton Cooper will have quickly realised it will not be easy to predict how Russell Martin’s side will set-up on Saturday.

That is because Martin has already used four different formations in Southampton’s seven league matches.

Southampton started the season playing a 3-5-2 before switching to a 4-3-3 against Manchester United.

Martin then played a 4-4-2 with two false nines against Bournemouth before switching to a 5-4-1 away at Arsenal.

Leicester City must focus on own game against Southampton

In some respects, it should not matter what formation Southampton use.

Leicester should fancy their chances against the side 19th in the table and should perhaps be focussing purely on their own game.

Cooper is a naturally risk-averse manager, though, so the uncertainty around how Southampton will lineup will bother him.

However, regardless of system, Martin will stick to his possession principles which means Leicester can press Southampton high and hope to enjoy similar levels of success as in the 4-1 and 5-0 wins last season.
