Carlton Palmer believes that the signing of Tom Cannon by Leicester City is a gamble given the fee and his young age.

Cannon spent last season on loan at Preston North End, returning to his parent club Everton this summer.

During his time at Deepdale he scored eight goals across 20 appearances, representing a decent return.

He has made appearances in the Premier League for Everton but hadn’t scored a senior goal in his time at the Toffees.

On deadline day the striker joined Leicester on a five year contract.

Former England star, Carlton Palmer isn’t too sure about the move.

What has Carlton Palmer said about Tom Cannon?

The midfielder had a career spanning 29 years and 594 appearances. Earning 18 international caps in that time.

When discussing the new Foxes man, he said: “Cannon is only 20, so he has youth on his side and spent the second half of last season on loan at Preston.

“He did very well with eight goals and a similar amount of assists.”

For his first season playing senior football this is nothing to be sniffed at and is a factor that have lured Leicester in.

Despite his Championship pedigree, Palmer wonders where his future could lie.

On this point, he said: “The question will be ‘should Leicester get promoted and how will he fare in the Premier League?”

For now, the Foxes are in the Championship where Cannon has done well previously.

Even with this, Palmer doesn’t see it: “I suppose it’s a gamble, but a gamble that Leicester are willing to take.”

With Patson Daka staying at the club, Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho already there, where are the minutes coming from?

Although it is hard to see where his game time is coming from, he represents a great young option and with certain players trying to leave, he’ll get his chance.
