Cardiff City boss Omer Riza has provided an update on Will Alves after he was absent in their win against Hull City.

Alves has impressed Cardiff fans since his deadline day loan move and has helped the Bluebirds in their fight against Championship relegation.

The teenager registered an assist in the weekend draw against Plymouth Argyle but was surprisingly missing from the squad for an important 1-0 win against their relegation rivals.

Amid fears from Cardiff and Leicester fans that the promising teenager may have suffered a serious injury.

Following the game, Riza confirmed why Alves was missing in the Tuesday night victory.

Cardiff City boss reveals why Will Alves missed Cardiff win

Speaking at the Cardiff City Stadium after his side’s huge three points, Riza revealed that Alves was missing after picking up a knee injury that they are yet to discover how severe it may be.

He told Wales Online: “Will Alves took a whack on his knee against Plymouth and it swelled up.

“We’re managing that and hopefully that’s not too serious.”

No update has been provided on whether or not he will be fit enough to face Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Friday night.

It was less than two years ago since Alves suffered a season-ending ACL injury that halted his development and almost certainly set his progression into the first team back by a couple of seasons.

Will Alves must be in Leicester’s first team next season

He may have only played three games for the Championship club, but it’s clear to see that Alves has got something about him.

The England youth international has wowed crowds already and when he inevitably returns to the King Power Stadium in the summer, he must become a part of the first team regularly.

Bilal El Khannouss is likely to leave if the Foxes are relegated and Facundo Buonanotte will return to Brighton & Hove Albion after his loan spell.

Not only does this free up two spots for Alves in the squad, it gives Leicester the opportunity to save millions and spend it elsewhere.

The club have known about his talents for years. Now it’s time to unleash it.
