Kasper Schmeichel will always be remembered by Leicester City fans as arguably one of their greatest goalkeeper of all time.

Schmeichel was ever-present during Leicester’s 2016 title-winning campaign and also lifted the FA Cup trophy in 2021.

The Denmark international spent 11 years at the King Power Stadium and amassed 479 appearances for the Foxes, placing him fourth on the all-time list of appearances.

Schmeichel never wanted to leave Leicester in 2022 after joining Ligue 1 side Nice but the 38-year-old has revealed that he almost joined German side Bayern Munich two years earlier.

Currently playing for Scottish giants Celtic in the Champions League following a brief spell at Anderlecht, Schmeichel has featured prominently under Brendan Rodgers this term.

The veteran shot-stopper has played 40 times in all competitions, including nine appearances in the Champions League, with Celtic set to lock horns with Bayern on Tuesday night.

Schmeichel’s side head to the Allianz Arena 2-1 down in the knockout phase play-off, giving them an uphill battle to beat the German giants and advance into the last 16 of the competition.

Funnily enough, the Danish star almost joined Bayern in 2020 but they pulled the plug on a deal for reasons unknown while Schmeichel was travelling to the airport.

“Yes, that’s correct, there were discussions about me joining Bayern,” he said via the Daily Mail during his pre-match press conference.

“It was after Manuel Neuer got his injury at the World Cup a couple of years ago. Basically, everything was kind of agreed and it just fell through at the last second. You would have to ask Bayern what the problem was.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure what happened, but I was kind of on my way to the airport.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t materialise. It would have been a dream to have played for a club like this, but it wasn’t to be.”

Brendan Rodgers’ lauds ‘world-class’ Schmeichel

Schmeichel reunited with former Leicester boss Rodgers in the summer, sealing a one-year deal at Celtic with the option of a further year.

The Dane may be approaching the end of his career but returning to work under his former boss has been special, with Rodgers left impressed by the ‘world-class’ displays of his goalkeeper.

Speaking in December, he said of Schmeichel via Celtic TV: “His style, that’s where it comes into play, (in those) pressure moments. The ball goes back, especially conditions like that there, some goalkeepers might not be as comfortable, so they then kind of end up just defending it and going long too early.

“It comes right back at you, (but) he brings the calmness. I’ve worked with him a long time and I know his quality, he’s a world-class shot-stopper. He’s great with his feet, his authority in the game is superb and his handling is so clean, so he’s been massive for us. Just his whole presence and personality, I’m really happy for him.”
