Leicester City boss on ‘disrespectful’ comparisons to Championship record-breakers

Leicester City manager, Enzo Maresca has refused to get carried away despite his side’s excellent start to the Championship.

After a 3-1 win over Swansea City, Leicester City secured the best start to a Championship season since the rebrand in 2004.

With 11 wins from 12 games, Enzo Maresca’s start to life at the King Power couldn’t have been much better.

Despite a defeat to Hull City, the Foxes sit top of the pile, five points clear of second and 11 clear of third.

With all that being said, fans are being urged to not get ahead of themselves.

What has Enzo Maresca said?

Last season Burnley secured the earliest-ever Championship promotion as well as a record-breaking point haul.

Following City’s start, comparisons are being made to the Clarets but Maresca isn’t keen on this.

Discussing Vincent Kompany’s side with The Athletic, he said: “I don’t think we are better than Burnley. To be honest, because they destroyed the Championship last year with 101 points.”

With 33 points from a possible 36, the Foxes appear to be on course to break that record.

All that being said, the manager isn’t getting carried away: “At this point, we still need another 70 to go ahead of them. I think it is disrespectful to talk.

“At this moment we are happy because everything is working well, but this is a journey. We have started in the right direction.”

Leicester are on the right trajectory that is for sure and unless there is a major problem, they are looking like prime promotion candidates under Maresca.

Serious promotion contenders

The Foxes are a Premier League team that somehow found themselves in the Championship.

Big names like Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Jamie Vardy and Ricardo Pereira stayed with the club. Harry Winks, Conor Coady and Stephy Mavididi came in to create a top team.

With the squad rotation that has so far taken place, combined with great results, the Foxes are in a great place.

Despite Maresca’s humility, he must be hopeful of Premier League football next season.
