Leicester City in danger of seeing impressive Champions League record broken by Premier League rival

Leicester City made Champions League history during their historic run in the mid-2010s.

The Foxes’ rise up the Premier League table was nothing short of remarkable under Claudio Ranieri.

Leicester City narrowly avoided Premier League relegation in the 2014/15 season, finishing 14th in the table after a sensational run at the very end of the campaign.

Despite their excellent form at the end of that season though, nobody could have predicted how good the Midlands outfit would be in 2015/16.

Leicester shocked the world, beating the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to secure their first and only Premier League trophy to date.

The following campaign saw the Foxes brought back down to earth with a 12th-place finish in the top flight but they still secured a place in the Champions League in 2016/17 and more than held their own against some of Europe’s elite clubs.

Leicester City Champions League record in danger of being broken by Aston Villa

Leicester kicked off their first season in the Champions League by beating Belgian outfit Club Brugge 3-0.

This was followed by 1-0 wins over FC Porto and FC Copenhagen, with the club winning four, drawing one and losing one of their group games that term.

Leicester made it to the quarter-final stage of the competition that season before being knocked out by Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid.

After winning their opening three games, the Foxes became only the second team in history to have won their first three Champions League games without conceding in the UCL era.

Spanish side Malaga also achieved the same feat in 2012/13 but now a current Premier League side have matched that record in 2024/25 and could beat it in their next outing.

Aston Villa beat Bologna 2-0 on Tuesday and have drawn level with Leicester for most games won without conceding in their opening games in the competition.

Unai Emery’s side are next in European action against the aforementioned Club Brugge and will break the record if they beat them without conceding.

Aston Villa will want to avoid same fate as Leicester City

Leicester may have matched an impressive record in their debut campaign in the Champions League but their Premier League form suffered amid struggles to play so many games in one campaign.

The Foxes failed to make it back into the top-four in any of the following campaigns before eventually being relegated in 2022/23.

Villa are currently handling the pressure of competing in the Champions League a lot better as they sit fourth in the table after eight games but only time will tell if they will face the same fate as Leicester.
