Leicester City have a lot of ties to England’s heartbreaking Euro 2004 campaign.

Former manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was in the Three Lions dugout for that tournament before going on to join Leicester City in 2010.

On the field meanwhile, two former Foxes played major roles in England’s quarter-final clash with Portugal.

Michael Owen and Frank Lampard scored in open play but saw their efforts cancelled out by substitutes Rui Costa and Helder Postiga.

After 120 minutes of action, the two European giants could not be separated and this is where the former Leicester duo came in.

Leicester City signed goalkeeper who haunted England at Euro 2004

David Beckham missed England’s opening penalty before Costa also failed to convert for Portugal.

The game turned on its head when ex-Fox Darius Vassell stepped up and saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Ricardo.

The keeper then took a spot-kick off his own, which sent Portugal into the semi-finals and England crashing out.

Seven years later, Leicester signed Ricardo from Real Betis on a free transfer in January 2011.

However, he made just eight appearances in all competitions, conceding nine and keeping two clean sheets before leaving to join Vitoria Setubal on another free in August 2011.

Ricardo reveals conversation with former Leicester and England star Darius Vassell

Ricardo somewhat bizarrely took his gloves off before saving the penalty from Vassell.

And years later, as per FourFourTwo, revealed that after reuniting with the forward at the King Power Stadium, they discussed the infamous save from back in 2004.

He said: “I saw him coming and decided to do a little crazy act of taking my gloves off. It was just mind games – something different to give me extra motivation, as well as cause confusion for the opponent.

“I was very happy it worked perfectly! Years later, I became teammates with Darius at Leicester – he told me he was already feeling anxious before the penalty, then it got worse when I took my gloves off!”
