Leicester City were one of the Premier League clubs who were considering a compensation claim against Everton when they suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2023.

Following Leicester’s shock relegation, they considered taking legal action against Everton, who stayed up at their expense.

The Foxes argued that Everton’s overspend, which breached PSR regulations, cost them their Premier League status.

Leeds United and Burnley also considered a claim, however, only the former have pursued it, with Leicester and Leeds appearing to drop out.

To gain clarity on the situation, Leicester City News have spoken to TBR’s finance expert Adam Williams, who suggests the Foxes may have settled their claim out of court.

What exactly is going on with the compensation claim against Everton?

Speaking to the site, football finance guru Adam Williams has explained exactly what’s going on with the compensation case against Everton, which only Burnley are pursuing.

“Basically, Burnley are arguing that Everton’s overspend sent them down,” Williams said.

“Had they operated within the Premier League’s financial parameters, Burnley’s position will be that Everton would have been relegated, not them.

“I think the fact that Leicester and the other teams originally pursuing this claim have dropped out is evidence that it’s going to be a difficult case to make.”

How much could Leicester have claimed in compensation?

Williams went on to dissect what factors would’ve determined how much Leicester were entitled to claim.

“Working out how much Leicester or any other claimant might have been entitled to if they could successfully make that argument is complicated.

“Each place in the Premier League is worth a couple of million pounds. If Everton finish above Leicester or whoever by virtue of having spent beyond what’s allowed, that on face value seems like a straightforward case.

“But in reality, you have to assess whether breaching PSR had a material impact on their league position. Sport is hard to quantify on those terms – it’s not really suited to being dissected along the lines of legalise.

“In Leicester’s case, the stakes are higher because they were relegated, finishing two points behind Everton in one of the season where the PSR breached occurred.

“It’s not just the loss of Premier League TV money either. There will have been an impact in terms of their commercial income in the Championship too which would have been part of the claim.”

Leicester may have settled compensation with Everton out of court

Williams suggested that Leicester may have decided against pursuing the case in court because they could’ve already reached a settlement with the Toffees.

“So why have they dropped out? From what I’ve read, it’s possible that they might have settled out of court. That’s speculation at this point, though. We might get some more info when the relevant accounts are released.

“If they have dropped out, however, its because they’ll have done a cost-benefit and decided it’s not worth it.

“You’re going to end up spending a lot of money on lawyers and plunging a lot of man hours into something which might not pay off.”
