Rudd van Nistelrooy’s old tomato ketchup theory could help Jamie Vardy power Leicester City to survival

When Jamie Vardy is struggling, Leicester City are too.

Despite being Leicester’s top scorer this season, Vardy hasn’t found the back of the net since the Foxes’ win against Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Since then, Leicester have lost every game and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side are facing the real possibility of heading back to the Championship.

There’s still time to turn it around – albeit with a mountain to climb – and if Vardy can get back to his goal scoring ways, they stand a real chance.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s tomato ketchup theory revealed by Gonzalo Higuain

If anyone knows about scoring goals, it’s Van Nistelrooy.

The Leicester manager enjoyed an illustrious career that included 150 goals in 219 games for Manchester United.

Even he went on a poor run of form though once and former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain revealed in 2016 the comparison between goals and a bottle of tomato ketchup made by the Dutchman that could inspire Vardy.

Speaking to Football Italia, Higuain said: “He told me something during a period in which I didn’t score. And it’s true.

You try, but it doesn’t come out. And when it comes out, it all does at once. It’s like ketchup. It’s a beautiful anecdote.”

Jamie Vardy can still complete incredible achievement

Now 38-years-old, Leicester shouldn’t be relying on Vardy anymore yet he still does the business.

Eight goals isn’t a dreadful return, but it’s not enough to keep the Foxes up.

What’s more, the forward is two goals shy of 200 goals for Leicester City. To not complete that before the season is out would be a travesty – especially when there is so little to cheer about this season.

If Vardy can take on board this ketchup anecdote posited by his manager in the past, there is fighting hope that Leicester could be a Premier League club next season.
