Leicester City are staring down the barrel of a second relegation in three seasons.

Leicester have been cut 15 points adrift of the relegation zone with just seven games to go, so a return to the Championship is inevitable.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is likely to leave the Foxes, with his side suffering an embarrassing 14 defeats from their last 15 outings.

Speaking to the site earlier this week, journalist Graeme Bailey revealed that Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior could make the switch to Leicester.

Danny Rohl is also a contender for Leicester, although he’s being linked with the RB Leipzig job, so that seems like a non-starter.

Former Southampton manager Russell Martin is emerging as a leading contender to replace Van Nistelrooy and now he’s dropped a subtle hint on potentially taking the job.

Russell Martin ready to take next managerial job

Leicester’s hierarchy are really keen on Martin and believe his style mirrors Enzo Maresca’s, which worked so well in the 2023/24 promotion campaign.

Martin has just appeared on Gary Lineker’s Rest Is Football podcast, which is usually the first step a manager takes to position himself for his next job.

And, with that said, the former Saints boss confirmed that he’s now ready to go back into the dugout amid rumours to the King Power Stadium.

Lineker asked: “But getting yourself ready to go again?”

Martin replied: “Oh yeah, it’s at the point now where I’m really starting to feel excited about what’s next. I’ve turned down a few jobs in the last few months.

“One or two abroad and a couple here, but just because it didn’t feel right. And genuinely, I just didn’t feel ready to go back in. I felt a little bit hurt about being sacked for the first time, like being really honest.”

Martin would be cheap appointment for Leicester

The Rosenior and Rohl appointments would require substantial cash, given they’re contracted to Strasbourg and Sheffield Wednesday, respectively.

Evidently, City will have to operate on a much stricter budget this summer as they reduce costs for the second tier.

So, all roads lead to Martin at this stage, who would be a cheap appointment for the Foxes, given he’s out of work and technically a free agent – in managerial terms.

The 39-year-old already has a promotion on his CV and will be very familiar with many of Leicester’s first-teamers.
