Who is Abdul Fatawu? Step into the life of Leicester City’s exciting youngster

Abdul Fatawu captured the hearts of Leicester City fans during his loan spell at the Foxes in their Championship-winning season and now he is back at the club permanently.

It’s not been since the days of Riyad Mahrez that Leicester City have had a winger that can get fans off of their seats.

When Abdul Fatawu arrived at the start of the 2023-24 season, he was relatively unknown. By the end of it, he was one of the first names on the teamsheet and was instrumental in guiding the Foxes back to the Premier League.

When did Abdul Fatawu join Leicester City?

Fatawu initially joined the club on loan from Sporting in Portugal for the 2023-24 campaign, arriving on August 31, 2023.

He made his debut three days later in a 1-0 defeat against Hull City and after winning the Championship, an automatic clause to buy the winger was activated. Fatawu joined the club permanently for a reported £14m, as per Leicestershire Live.

The transfer saw his original club, Steadfast FC, pocket over half of the fee after they inserted a sell-on clause when he first joined Sporting.

Since joining Leicester in 2023, Fatawu has gone on to become a regular feature in the first team.

As of August 2024, Transfermarkt states that the 20-year-old has seven goals and 14 assists from 44 games for the Foxes.

According to Capology, Fatawu earns a salary of £9,500-a-week, equating to £494,000 across the season. This makes him one of the lowest-paid players at the club.

Abdul Fatawu international career

After rising through the youth teams, Fatawu was called up to the Ghanaian senior squad in March 2021, however, he didn’t make an appearance.

He made his official debut in a 3-1 win against Zimbabwe as part of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Fatawu’s performances led to him receiving a call-up for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the youngest player in the side and fourth-youngest in the entire tournament.

His first international goal came against Nicaragua on 27 September 2021.

In 2024 Fatawu was set to be selected for Ghana’s AFCON campaign but decided to turn down a call-up, instead choosing to focus on Leicester’s promotion push.
