Who is Jamie Vardy? Inside the life of Leicester City’s legendary striker

Jamie Vardy is widely considered one of the greatest Leicester City players of all-time and was part of the famous Premier League title-winning campaign in 2016.

Vardy has been at the club since 2012 and has racked up over 450 appearances, with many of those coming in the Premier League.

Throughout his near 12-year spell with the Foxes, the former Fleetwood Town forward established himself as an England international and went to two major tournaments with the Three Lions.

It’ll be a sad day for Leicester City fans when he calls time on his career but notwithstanding that, he’ll always be firmly etched into the history books and remembered for his prolific spell in the East Midlands.

When did Jamie Vardy join Leicester City?

Leicester City paid £1m for the signature of Jamie Vardy from National League outfit Fleetwood Town in May 2012, as per BBC Sport.

Vardy was 25 at the time and became the most expensive export in the history of non-league football.

Since joining The Foxes, Vardy has risen to the summit of English football and has become a well-polished finisher. As of February 2024, he has scored a whopping 182 goals for the East Midlanders, as per Transfermarkt.

Remarkably, 136 of those have come in the top flight, making him the 15th-highest scorer in Premier League history.

Vardy was awarded the Premier League Golden Boot award at the end of the 2019/20 campaign after firing home 23 goals en route to a fifth-placed finish with Leicester.

Vardy made his England debut during a goalless draw against Ireland back in June 2015.

What is Jamie Vardy’s corner flag celebration?

Vardy is well-known for his celebrations and is often provoking rival fans with them. Though, perhaps his celebration against Sheffield United a few seasons back is his most famous.

During the 2020/21 campaign, the City poacher netted a last-minute winner for his side against The Blades and proceeded to wheel away in celebration before sliding into the corner flag with his studs.

The flag, which shattered into small pieces, had a rainbow pattern on it to mark the annual activation of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign.

Vardy later came out and gifted the rainbow corner flag to Leicester’s LGBT+ fans group with a goodwill message.
