Why Graham Potter could be more interested in Leicester City job than before, ex-Chelsea boss would be major coup

Graham Potter is one of the top candidates to replace Steve Cooper as Leicester City manager.

Potter has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in April last year, despite only being in charge for seven months.

The move to Stamford Bridge did not work out – and damaged his reputation somewhat – but he is still widely regarded as one of the best British coaches.

The 49-year-old did an incredible job at Brighton for over three seasons and would be a major coup for Leicester. But would he join the Foxes?

Leicester City job could interest Graham Potter

Potter has been linked with Leicester before. He and Steve Cooper were the top two targets to take over from Enzo Maresca in the summer.

The Foxes ended up appointing the latter, which turned out to be a mistake, so maybe now they will get their hands on the former.

“Potter had been a contender for the England job at the time, with Gareth Southgate’s future in the balance,” wrote Leicestershire Live.

“Now Thomas Tuchel has been appointed Three Lions boss, Potter may now be more available for a club job.”

With the England job no longer up for grabs, and Ruben Amorim going to Manchester United, Potter’s presumably-preferred vacancies have been filled.

Leicester are the only current Premier League team without a manager so it could be the right time for him to sign the dotted line at the King Power Stadium.

Why Graham Potter is the perfect Steve Cooper replacement

Potter had succeeded at every post (Leeds Carnegie, Ostersund, Swansea City and Brighton) before he moved to Chelsea in September 2022.

And he was not the first manager to struggle with the lofty expectations at Stamford Bridge, nor will he be the last. So that spell should be taken with a pinch of salt.

What Potter did in over three years at Brighton is much more relevant to what he could do at Leicester – and that’s exciting for Foxes fans.

Potter took the Seagulls from the bottom half of the Premier League to the Europa League. If he could just get Leicester into the top half one day, he would go down as a phenomenal appointment.

Plus, his style of play would be highly appreciated by Leicester fans. His teams tend to control possession, even against the bigger sides, which is something that Cooper’s side were not capable of.
