Why Jeremy Monga didn’t have a sponsor on his Leicester shirt after making his debut vs Newcastle United

Leicester City suffered an eighth home loss in a row after Newcastle United’s routine win against the Foxes.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side now sit 15 points adrift of Premier League safety with Leicester’s survival chances now looking all but buried after yet another big defeat at the King Power Stadium, with a return to the Championship looking imminent.

There was one bright spark for the Foxes during their loss against Newcastle, though, in the form of Leicester academy star Jeremy Monga making his debut from the bench, with the winger becoming the second youngest player in Premier League history as a result.

Eagle-eyed watchers would have noticed that Monga’s shirt did have Leicester’s usual shirt sponsor, and there is good reason why the 15-year-old wonderkid had to wear a special kit for his debut.

Jeremy Monga prohibited from wearing a shirt with a gambling sponsor

Monga became one of just two 15-year-olds to play a Premier League match three years after Arsenal handed a certain Ethan Nwaneri his debut for the Gunners, with the winger since becoming a regular for the Gunners under Mikel Arteta.

Yet, because of Monga’s age, the winger was not allowed to wear Leicester’s usual shirt with a BC Games sponsorship due to Premier League rules on minors wearing kits that promote online gambling.

With Leicester fans demanding Monga to feature for the Foxes against Newcastle, supporters got their wish in what was the only real moment to savour for the East Midlands side against the Toon, who played the King Power Stadium club off the park.

And with Leicester’s relegation to the Championship a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’, there’s every chance that Monga could feature more for Van Nistelrooy’s side in the final seven games of the season, where the winger could make even more Premier League history.

Could Jeremy Monga realistically play again for Leicester this season?

Any club handing a 15-year-old minutes in the Premier League can be treated with specitism, with Monga’s case likely to be viewed as such given how desperate Leicester’s situation is now looking in the top-flight.

Yet looking at Leicester’s final Premier League games, there is a real chance that Monga will feature again for the Foxes, especially against the likes of already-relegated Southampton and Ipswich Town, who also look set to head back down to the Championship.

Indeed, Monga had some bright moments against Newcastle and could thrive against other teams in the Premier League if given the chance, with Leicester having nothing to lose at this stage in the season with relegation just a matter of official confirmation.
