Wilfred Ndidi reacted to an unexpected delay he and his Nigeria teammates encountered while travelling to their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Leicester City star was part of the Nigeria side that beat Libya 1-0 on Friday thanks to Fissayo Dele-Bashiru’s strike.

Libya complained that they were treated poorly and ahead of the return fixture, Nigeria have been left angered by the response.

Wilfred Ndidi claims Nigeria have been held ‘hostage’ ahead of Libya game

Reports in Africa have claimed that Nigeria have been left stranded at Al-Abraq Airport after the Libyan government diverted their chartered flight to the city of Benghazi.

Al-Abraq airport is still four hours away from where they need to be and since the rumours have emerged, Nigeria’s stars have claimed they have been severely mistreated.

Leicester midfielder Ndidi was one of those to react on social media, writing on his Instagram story: “This is not football. Very embarrassing. Hostage to a national team. Disgrace.”

Teammate Victor Boniface even claimed that they had been at the airport for 13 hours, with no food, wifi, or a place to sleep offered to them.

Nigeria to boycott AFCON qualifier over unfair treatment

After several Nigeria stars complained of the way they had been treated, the country’s football federation confirmed that the national team would be boycotting the fixture.

It read: “Fatigued players and officials have remained nonplussed as the host Libyan Football Federation failed to send any reception team or even vehicles to take the delegation members from the airport to their hotel, said to be 3 hours away in Benghazi.

“The NFF made arrangements for separate vehicles for the team but the plan was unhinged by the diversion of the aircraft.

“Players have resolved not to play the match any longer as NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home.”

The full statement can be read here.

Since posting the update, it’s been confirmed that the Nigerian government are facilitating plans to bring the players and staff back to the country before returning to their respective clubs.

Ndidi will be back in time to be considered by Steve Cooper for the Foxes’ next Premier League game, which is a trip to winless Southampton.
