Leicester City need a miracle if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

The Foxes clashed with Brentford on Friday night and in one of their worst performances of the season, lost 3-0.

Leicester City now sit 19th in the Premier League table behind Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers, both of whom are in slightly better form.

To make matters worse, Leicester now have a torrid run of fixtures coming up, which includes meetings with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool.

The Foxes have pulled off a great escape before back in 2014/15 but judging by fan reaction to Ruud van Nistelrooy after Brentford, he probably isn’t the man to help them achieve it.

Should Van Nistelrooy go, Leicester could look to follow in the footsteps of Everton and bring a former manager back to the club in their hour of need.

David Moyes Everton success should inspire Leicester City

While it doesn’t always work out, Everton appointing David Moyes as manager for the second time has proven to be a stroke of genius.

The Scotsman returned on January 11th when the Toffees were one point above the relegation zone having picked up three wins from 19.

However, since his return, Everton have lost just one Premier League game – his first against Aston Villa.

Following the Villa defeat, the Merseyside outfit have won four, earned a huge 2-2 draw with rivals Liverpool, and most recently drew with Manchester United – a game they could have easily won if they were awarded a penalty late on.

This run has pushed Everton up 12th and 14 points clear of the relegation zone at the time of writing.

In turn, Leicester should now follow suit by bringing back one of their most successful managers, Martin O’Neil.

Why Martin O’Neil left Leicester City

O’Neil joined Leicester in 1995 and won promotion to the Premier League during his first season at the helm.

The Irishman went on to win two League Cups with the Foxes and reach the final of another in 1999.

During his time at the club, O’Neil had interest from Leeds United, prompting Leicester fans to protest by holding up ‘Don’t go, Martin’ posters during one game, as per the Daily Mail.

The manager did eventually depart for Celtic in 2000, with O’Neil opening up on leaving Leicester in 2024.

He said: “It didn’t have anything to do with the backing, the Chairman Mr Elsom was going to let me have some of the Emile Heskey transfer money to use for summer signings.

“It was just the lure of Celtic, but Leicester remains a great time of my life.”

Out of work since 2019, the 72-year-old clearly has a soft spot for Leicester and it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world if they called him up and asked him to return.
