Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas could be on the move once more with Sunderland showing their interest.

Luke Thomas spent the first half of the season on loan at Premier League side Sheffield United.

He made 12 appearances for the club until the appointment of Chris Wilder curtailed his chances of featuring for the Blades.

Wilder made it clear from minute one that he was going to shut up shop and given Thomas is an attacking full-back, he didn’t fit into his immediate plans.

With the new manager also wanting to invest in his playing squad, he had to free up space for some new players, meaning the 22-year-old was sent back to the King Power.

After struggling in a style that required him to sit back and keep his attacking instincts dormant, he could now be loaned out to a Championship side that would unleash him further forward.

Enzo Maresca has made it clear that he doesn’t fit into his plans. The likes of James Justin, Callum Doyle and Ricardo Pereira are all above him in the pecking order.

If he wants to play regular football – like he needs to – it will be away from Leicester.

Sunderland want Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas on loan

According to Sunderland Nation, Michael Beale is eyeing a move for the Foxes full-back as they aim to resolve their injury crisis at left-back.

Sunderland have been struck by so much bad luck in that position this term with Niall Huggins and Dennis Cirkin suffering long-term injuries.

Although Aji Alese can fill that void, the club are very keen on luring Thomas to the Stadium of Light.

Beale wants to bring in an attacking full-back and it’s beneficial for both parties if the youngster is shifted on for the remainder of the campaign.

Not only will it enable him to show his attacking qualities down the left flank, but it would also strengthen Leicester’s hopes of securing a deal for Stefano Sensi.

Leicester need to shift players to sign Stefano Sensi

After spending heavily in the summer, despite acquiring big money for James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, Leicester still need to shift some of their fringe players from their wage budget.

It was revealed by Fabrizio Romano that outgoings are still needed for Maresca to continue holding talks with Sensi, who is a player he ‘really wants’.

Given how stacked Leicester are at full-back, Thomas is surplus to requirements and loaning him to Sunderland could help speed up the process of signing the Italian maestro.

The Black Cats would likely contribute to some of his wages and help get the ball rolling in terms of departures with the likes of Harry Souttar, Dennis Praet and Danny Ward also on the chopping block.
