Leicester City are attempting to pull off some ambitious moves in this transfer window as Enzo Maresca aims to set a Championship points record.
Enzo Maresca has an embarrassment of riches available to him at Leicester, but those have decreased in recent weeks with seven players out.
While the likes of Jamie Vardy and Wilfried Ndidi are sidelined through injury, Patson Daka and Harry Souttar are away on international duty, leaving the Italian short in some areas.
This has heightened the need to strengthen his squad in the transfer window.
When it comes to signing players of high quality, the Foxes are on a level of their own compared to the rest of the Championship.
For instance, Leicester were after talented centre-back Lucas Beraldo from SAO Paulo, who instead signed for PSG.
Now, Maresca wants to sign an Inter Milan midfielder who has won nine caps for Italy and scored three times.
Leicester City hold talks for Stefano Sensi
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Leicester have approached Inter for Sensi and talks are ongoing over a permanent move.
The 28-year-old also has interest from Serie A side Sassuolo, but it’s the Foxes who are sinking their teeth into negotiations.
While it isn’t a foregone conclusion, Leicester are likely to be playing Premier League football next season, and they can use that as a method of persuading Sensi to move to the King Power.
Stefano Sensi would be a coup for Leicester
Sensi joined Inter from Sassuolo in the summer of 2019 but following a bright start – three goals and four assists in his first 12 appearances for the club – the rest of his time has been blighted by injury setbacks.
A technically gifted operator, who can glide across the pitch, a large portion of Sensi’s career has been snatched away from him by cruel injury setbacks.
But as he enters what he hopes will be the peak years of his career, Leicester could be getting a coup by capturing the Italian maestro.
Not since Wolves in the summer of 2017 has a Championship club really held such power in attracting talent from Europe’s biggest clubs.
During their period as a spending juggernaut in the second tier, Wolves were able to bring in Diogo Jota from Atletico Madrid and Porto’s Ruben Neves.
Now, Maresca wants to solidify his midfield with a fellow Italian and the Inter star could offer an extra sprinkling of class alongside Harry Winks and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Despite rarely playing for the Serie A giants in the past year, when he has been given a chance, he hasn’t looked out of place against his fellow positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues.
According to FBref, the technical wizard ranks in the top 9% for passes attempted, top 13% for shot-creating actions and top 16% for progressive passes per 90.
Once hailed as a ‘wizard’ by journalist Sam Tighe, Sensi has shown the playmaking abilities that render him too good for the Championship and he would be a magnificent coup for Maresca.
