‘It’s not Fergie time, it’s offside time’ – Ruud van Nistelrooy slams controversial decision that ended Leicester City’s FA Cup hopes vs Man United

Ruud van Nistelrooy has reacted to the controversial call that saw Leicester City lose at the death to Manchester United in the FA Cup Fourth Round.

Bilal El Khannouss and Wilfred Ndidi starred for Leicester as the Foxes took a well-deserved lead at Old Trafford as Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s header gave the away side the lead.

It looked as if it would be Leicester’s day as Caleb Okoli produced a stunning goal line clearance but his efforts were soon in vein seconds later as Joshua Zirkzee equalised from close range.

Everyone was gearing up for extra time only for Harry Maguire to spoil the party in the final seconds of second half stoppage time.

Leicester fans fumed as Maguire was clearly offside and Van Nistelrooy was very much in agreement with supporters’ sentiments.

Many questioned why VAR didn’t intervene with Maguire’s offside goal, however, FA Cup rules mean that VAR isn’t introduced until the Fifth Round.

That won’t do anything to comfort the Foxes and Van Nistelrooy, who was condemned to an unhappy return to a club he had so much success at.

Speaking to ITV after the game, the Leicester boss couldn’t hide his anger and said: “This wasn’t about being beaten in Fergie time, it was about being beaten in offside time.

“VAR wasn’t necessary. That deals with centimetres and inches; this was half a metre. He was clear in line.

“It’s a hard one to take as the team deserved a draw and the extra time then you never know what happens.

“We pressed United and on the ball we were stable. Of course, we knew the second half we’d give away chances but even then it wasn’t much.”Decisions like these at our level are hard to swallow.”

What does Leicester City’s season look like now?

All that remains for the Foxes is the Premier League campaign.

Defeat at Old Trafford means it’s eight losses from their last nine games in all competitions and it doesn’t get any easier with Arsenal the visitors next weekend.
