Paul Merson makes Leicester City v Tottenham score prediction ahead of Premier League opener

There are now just days to go before Leicester City kick off their Premier League return at home against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.

Steve Cooper will be looking forward to his first competitive game in charge of Leicester City, but will undoubtedly wish he had a few more signings through the door.

Leicester have made five signings so far this summer but their squad remains very light.

Tottenham will present a tough test to kick-off the campaign, but Leicester should take confidence from the fact they were defensively porous in their first season under Ange Postecoglou last time round.

The problem is, with Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka both injured, Cooper does not have many options to exploit this weakness.

A deal for Bayer Leverkusen striker Adam Hlozek is close, but it is unlikely the Czech centre-forward would be ready to face Spurs even if signed in time.

Paul Merson predicts difficult start for Leicester City against Tottenham

Cooper will likely have had many a sleepless night as he looks to devise a plan to start the new season with a win.

The King Power will be in full voice as they get behind their side in the knowledge few expect them to survive in the Premier League this season.

Leicester will have to use that as motivation, with pundit Paul Merson predicting a tough year.

Merson was previewing each of the Premier League opening weekend’s fixtures for Sportskeeda when he said: “Leicester have lost their manager this summer and have their work cut out for them this season.”

The former Arsenal midfielder then offered his prediction, saying “I’m going to go with Tottenham to win this game” before giving his verdict of a 3-0 Spurs win.

Steve Cooper must build siege mentality at Leicester this season

Leicester fans’ joy at winning the Championship did not last long this summer as Enzo Maresca left the club to take the vacant managerial job at Chelsea shortly after.

He was followed to Stamford Bridge by star man Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, with the £30 million sale required to avoid a breach of Premier League spending rules.

The club have already been accused of a historic breach, with Leicester appealing the charge against them from March.

Therefore, it will not be difficult for Foxes fans to feel like everything is conspiring against them to stay in the Premier League this season before a ball has even been kicked.

Cooper must harness that frustration and use it as a force for good by building a siege mentality if Leicester are to have a chance this season, particularly at home.

If he does that, Leicester might just pull off a shock.
