Stephy Mavididi makes statement and signing needed in key position… five things learned from Leicester City draw vs Brighton

Leicester City fans went to the AMEX stadium with little hope of securing a positive result against Brighton after their losing run.

Leicester have lost eight games in a row without scoring in each, leaving Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future in doubt and the Foxes close to relegation.

On Saturday afternoon, supporters would have been fearing the worst when Joao Pedro scored a first-half penalty, despite the visitors starting well for once.

But, Leicester fought back and scored their first goal since January 26 through Stephy Mavididi, who rifled his left-footed effort into the net.

Van Nistelrooy’s men then conceded another penalty just after half-time, Luke Thomas was the culprit this time, and Pedro converted.

However, just when many thought the Seagulls would go on to win the game, Leicester put in arguably one of the best displays of the season.

A wicked delivery from Bilal El Khannouss was inviting enough for Caleb Okoli to power his header home in the 74th minute. The visitors were then in the ascendancy and could have gone on to score the winner but were made to settle for a draw.

So, with all that said, here are five things we learned from Leicester’s draw against Brighton.

Stephy Mavididi is class

Mavididi made his first start in the league since January, and the Frenchman certainly made an unbelievable impression.

The 26-year-old was fast, direct and dangerous on the counter-attack throughout, showing his quality down the left wing.

And he sent the away end into pandemonium when he scored a brilliant goal with his left foot in the first half, sending a clear message to Van Nistelrooy.

Leicester finally score

Do not scratch your eyes, Leicester City scored a goal for the first time in 76 days at the AMEX stadium and no one could have expected that.

So, after failing to score in eight consecutive matches, the goals arrived like London buses on the South Coast as City scored twice, with Okoli netting the second.

It was a more spirited performance from the Foxes for the first time in months and a change in formation from Van Nistelrooy proved to be the catalyst.

Bilal El Khannouss was magnificent

Throughout this campaign, El Khannouss has been a rare shining light for the Foxes and he was brilliant against Brighton.

The 20-year-old was the architect of some excellent attacking moves and it was his wicked delivery that found the head of Okoli in the second half.

Ahead of the summer, Leicester are at huge risk of losing the Moroccan, as Arsenal are interested in El Khannouss, meaning fans have to enjoy watching him while they can.

Jamie Vardy replacement needed

It was another game without a goal for Jamie Vardy against Brighton and for all of his hard work and lung-bursting runs, the Englishman never looked threatening.

That was partly because they didn’t fashion many chances for him, but it also proved that Leicester need to sign a striker in the summer and a long-term replacement for the 38-year-old.

Vardy could sign a new contract, with his current one expiring in June, though someone younger with big potential is needed to challenge.

Discipline must improve

Leicester’s discipline has cost them on numerous occasions this term, seeing their defence switch off and lose their heads.

In the draw against Brighton, Conor Coady and Luke Thomas both conceded penalties, which showed their lack of discipline.

It was a brilliant performance from Leicester at the AMEX, and arguably their best of the season, but their discipline was one thing that let them down.
