One former Premier League legend and England international has said he wants Leicester City to be relegated because of Jamie Vardy.

Leicester are now five points clear of the relegation zone after salvaging a last-minute draw against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

Jamie Vardy and Bobby De Cordova-Reid both scored late on to extend Ruud van Nistelrooy’s unbeaten start as the new Foxes manager and provide a little more breathing room between themselves and the bottom three.

Vardy has already scored double the amount he reached in the 2022/23 campaign, while De Cordova-Reid described the Leicester captain as an ‘absolute joke’.

His goal also brings him to within eight of 150 Premier League goals and for one former player, that’s a worrying sign.

Jermain Defoe wants Leicester City relegated because of Jamie Vardy goal

Another great Premier League goal scorer is Jermain Defoe.

Sitting 10th in the all-time Premier League goal scorer rankings, Defoe is currently 20 goals ahead of Vardy at the time of writing but is rapidly closing in.

The 37-year-old’s strike against Brighton was his sixth of the season and eight more will bring him level with Michael Owen, who occupies 11th spot with 150.

Speaking about Vardy’s impressive goal record on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Defoe jokingly said he hopes the Foxes are relegated so that Vardy can’t beat his record.

He said:  “Well…

“I’m hanging on to that top ten.”

Jermain Defoe reveals what makes Jamie Vardy so prolific in front of goal

Despite being 37, Vardy is showing no signs of slowing down this season.

A goal and an assist at the weekend means he has nine goal contributions from 14 appearances this season and his strike in Sunday’s draw was another impressive one to add to the collection.

Instead of taking a touch from De Cordova-Reid’s deflected effort, the forward used his right foot to poke it home first time and start the comeback.

As a prolific goal scorer himself during his playing days, Defoe knows all about finding the back of the net, and he singled out one key aspect of Vardy’s game which explains why he is still scoring goals.

Defoe said: “I think he’s obviously an experienced player but he’s just so efficient in front of goal. When he gets the chance, you always fancy him to score or at least make the right decisions.

“You can see him here [for his goal vs Brighton], look at the movement, he’s got no interest to come short for the ball, he’s on the shoulder and seen the defender’s number.

“Just look at the concentration levels and there, he could’ve took it with his right foot but to have that composure… He’s so efficient in front of goal.”
