Leicester City saw two former players turn out for Celtic in the Champions League on Tuesday as they were cruelly beaten by Bayern Munich.
Title-winning goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who nearly joined Bayern Munich in 2020, was a revelation between the posts for Celtic.
The towering Dane made several big saves in the match as the Bhoys were beaten 2-1 aggregate, with Alphonso Davies scoring a last-minute winner to break their hearts.
Celtic arguably deserved to win the tie at the Allianz Arena, missing multiple big chances to pull clear of the hosts, with one other former Leicester City player starring in Europe’s elite competition.

How the media rated Jeffrey Schlupp’s display for Celtic against Bayern Munich
Jeffrey Schlupp was also a part of Leicester’s 2016 title-winning campaign, making 24 appearances under Claudio Ranieri.
Schlupp became a cult hero at the King Power Stadium, amassing 150 appearances for the Foxes before signing for Crystal Palace in January 2017.
The Ghanian winger has since played 247 times for the Eagles but was used sporadically by Oliver Glasner this term, and was loaned to Celtic in the winter window.
He was selected to make his full Champions League debut for Celtic on Tuesday night, playing the full ninety minutes and starring as a left-back.
Schlupp garnered attention from the Scottish media after the game and was rated highly for how he dealt with Michael Olise in the Allianz.
He was rated an 8/10 by the Scotsman who wrote: “A surprise starter, the veteran left-back coped pretty well with Michael Olise, his former Bayern Munich teammate. Winning goal did come down his side, an area the Germans targeted throughout.”
Meanwhile, Glasgow World handed him a bizarre 7.8/10 and summarised: “Favoured over Greg Taylor at left-back and tasked with keeping Olise quiet. Made a number of excellent blocks and showcased his big game experience to good affect.”
Schlupp’s stats vs Bayern Munich
The above assessment of the Ghanian’s display was reflected in his impressive statistics, as the former Leicester star successfully shackled Olise.
Jeffrey Schlupp’s stats vs Bayern Munich
- 90 minutes played
- 9 clearances
- 5 interceptions
- 6 tackles
- 7/8 ground duels won
- 28/34 accurate passes (82%)
- 3 accurate long balls
It was brilliant to see Schlupp compete in Europe’s elite competition almost nine years on from playing in the Champions League for Leicester.
Of course, it wasn’t to be for Celtic on the night however, the 32-year-old can hold his head high alongside teammate Schmeichel.
