Leicester City have had some characters over the years in the club dressing room.

Players like Jamie Vardy have always been a sucker for a prank whilst Kasper Schmeichel was more of a model professional and had standards everyone wished to aspire to.

It was these blend of personalities that led to Leicester’s self-proclaimed ‘pub team’ becoming Premier League champions in 2016.

Added to the mix was one player who liked to go one step further in life before almost taking on a bizarre career path.

Marcin Wasilewski almost became an MMA fighter

Marcin Wasilewski was Leicester’s tough Polish defender who spent several years at the club.

Wasilewski was instrumental in the Championship title-winning season and was valuable cover in the Premier League years before hanging up his boots in 2020 after three years at Wisla Krakow.

Now working as a pundit on Polish TV, the former defender is a busy man but life could’ve been different as he nearly swapped the pitch for the octagon.

A huge combat sports fan, Polish fight promoter Mateusz Borek told The Sun in 2020 that he saw a future for him in the sport.

“I know Marcin’s sporting career is not yet over,” he said.

“I think one of the MMA organisations will convince him to enter the cage. I know that this has always been Marcin’s dream.”

He never did fight, but never say never in the future.

Marcin Wasilewski ate wine glass on a night out

Getting in the octagon to fight is one thing, but to eat glass on a night out? That’s a new level of crazy.

But, according to former Leicester teammate Ritchie De Laet, that’s exactly what Wasilewski did once.

Recalling the story to Belgian paper Het Nieuwsblad in 2016, he said: “Marcin was truly a very nice person – untypical, but likeable.

“He was the sort of guy you have a laugh with, but who does some strange things.

“I remember going for a meal with him at a very smart restaurant. All of a sudden he picked up his glass and literally bit into it, without turning a hair. There were pieces of glass everywhere. He looked at me and started laughing.

“I just couldn’t understand what he had done at all.”

I think we’ll stick to water, thanks Marcin.
