Leicester City were in League Cup action against Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday evening.

Steve Cooper was aiming to secure his first competitive win as Leicester City manager in midweek.

The Foxes have not had a great start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, failing to win their opening two matches.

Leicester drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur at the King Power Stadium before losing to Fulham in their last league outing.

However, in what should prove to be a much-needed confidence boost for the Midlands outfit, Cooper watched his side dominate in the second round of the League Cup.

Jordan Ayew, Stephy Mavididi, Wilfred Ndidi and Harry Winks all got on the scoresheet as Leicester beat Tranmere Rovers 4-0.

Steve Cooper makes Jordan Ayew admission

Jordan Ayew joined Leicester from Crystal Palace last week in a £6m transfer that should open the door for Tom Cannon to leave.

Ayew played the final 27 minutes of the club’s 2-1 loss to Fulham over the weekend but was handed his first start against Tranmere on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old had a lively outing and scored his first-ever goal for Leicester.

Following the match, Cooper spoke to LCFC.com and was quick to stress how important Ayew will be in the current season.

He said:  “It (Ayew’s goal) was really important in the game because we needed attacking players to do something to make a difference.

“He did that. He had a good impact in the game, scored, got the right amount of minutes and that’s something we would have written if we could have planned it.

“He’s obviously an experienced player and he’ll be determined to do well for us now in the Premier League. He was so keen to come here and we look forward to involving him and we’re going to need him alongside everyone else as well.”

Is Jordan Ayew good enough for Leicester City

Ayew getting off the mark in a Leicester shirt is a boost, but question marks still remain over the forward’s ability to lead the line in the Premier League.

Cooper still has very limited options up front, with an ageing Jamie Vardy unlikely to be able to complete a full 38-game campaign and Patson Daka currently out injured.

After scoring on Tuesday, Ayew could be in line for his first Premier League start this weekend but he does not have a great goalscoring record in the top flight.

All told, the former Palace and Swansea City striker has netted just 37 league goals in 276 appearances – a return that will probably not be enough to help keep Leicester in the Premier League.
