The real reason Arsenal star rejected £10m move to Leicester City in 2017 after Arsene Wenger sanctioned exit

Leicester City are back in Premier League action against Arsenal on Saturday and had things gone differently, could have been lining out with one of the Gunners’ former players.

The Foxes and Arsenal have a long history, with it Arsene Wenger’s side who were the closest challengers to Leicester City in their historic Premier League title-winning campaign of 2015/16.

Following the Midlands outfit’s success, Arsenal tried to sign Jamie Vardy that summer but the striker decided to turn down a move.

Leicester will be so glad he did as, despite being 38 years of age, he remains integral to the club and their fight for Premier League survival.

The striker has netted seven and assisted three in the top flight this term and Vardy’s impressive record against Arsenal suggests there is a chance of an upset when the two teams meet on Saturday.

It’s not just Vardy who has rejected a transfer between the two clubs in recent seasons, however.

Why Mohamed Elneny rejected Leicester City transfer

Back in 2017, Leicester had enjoyed a spell in the Champions League but their league form had dipped somewhat.

They ended the 2016/17 campaign 12th in the top flight but were looking to rebuild in the summer.

In a bid to do so, Leicester were targeting a move for Arsenal midfielder, Mohamed Elneny.

A report from the Sun in July 2017 claimed that the Gunners had accepted a £10m offer from Leicester for the Egyptian with manager at the time, Arsene Wenger, willing to offload him.

However, despite being given permission to speak to the Foxes, Elneny turned down a move to the King Power Stadium because he was loving life in the English capital.

What former Arsenal star and Leicester target Mohamed Elneny is doing now

After rejecting Leicester, Elney spent another seven years on the books of the North London outfit but saw very little playing time.

The 32-year-old made 161 appearances for Arsenal in eight years, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists.

He eventually left the Emirates in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer, joining Al-Jazira.

Elneny has so far made 16 appearances for his new club in the current campaign, in which he’s netted once and assisted twice.
