Ruud van Nistelrooy faced the press for the first time as Leicester City manager on Monday.

The Foxes are in action against West Ham United on Tuesday night in a game that could have huge implications at the lower end of the Premier League table.

Defeat at the King Power Stadium could mean that Leicester drop into the bottom three, if results go against them, whilst a win would drag their opponents right back into the mix.

Van Nistelrooy will get to meet the Leicester fans for the first time from the dugout and the 48-year-old will hope for a winning start to his tenure.

There was plenty to discuss so, with that, here’s three things you may have missed from today’s press conference.

Ruud van Nistelrooy reveals why he took the Leicester City job

This will be Van Nistelrooy’s second job as full time manager of a senior club, but he isn’t without experience.

The 48-year-old has spent the past decade coaching and most recently acted as interim manager for Manchester United before leaving the club following Ruben Amorim’s appointment.

Asked what convinced him to take the Leicester job, Van Nistelrooy revealed he had spoken to former Foxes boss Enzo Maresca for guidance.

He said: “When the approach was first there, you think about the club, the set-up, the players. You want to know about the people who work there and Enzo knew, what better information to get. We spoke after Chelsea and he was really positive. He was absolutely right according to the first impressions I get.”

Under Steve Cooper, there was criticism from Leicester fans about their style of play, as well as the amount of goals conceded.

Most goals conceded in the Premier League 24/25

Leicester have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League and Van Nistelrooy has hinted that his philosophy will focus heavily on stopping the amount of goals being conceded.

“Yesterday and today it has been a topic of discussion,” he revealed. “How can the back four play together with the sixes in front, who’s running, who’s following who, body positions, etc. There’s a lot of detail in there. Today was the first time we had the whole group together.

“The basic structure is 4-4-2. There was a three-box-three that I used at United and that was developed by Enzo here. I saw that as an advantage coming here. It saves me a bit of work!

“When you play top teams or mid-table teams or lower-ranked teams, it sometimes requires a different approach.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy on the January transfer window

One topic that is bound to be at the centre of all things Leicester City in the coming weeks is the January transfer window.

With less than a month to go, plans are being put into place and it’s likely that Van Nistelrooy will want to bring in his own players to adapt to his style.

While he remained coy on what those plans could look like, the Dutchman said that talks had been held about how the window may shape up to look like.

Van Nistelrooy said: “That was a topic of discussion. The two conversations were very open and clear. It’s important to know how things are in the near future and the further future. January was discussed.

“The current squad was discussed. I have to have a good assessment over the coming weeks ahead of January, giving every player a chance. I’m working with people at the club but I’m looking to bring in other people.”
