Gary Lineker has broken his silence on Leicester City’s decision to appoint Ruud van Nistelrooy as manager.

Van Nistelrooy was confirmed as the new Leicester boss on Friday, signing a deal until June 2027 as he replaced Steve Cooper.

Although he wasn’t in charge on Saturday, Van Nistelrooy was there to watch Leicester as they were hammered 4-1 by Brentford.

Foxes fans are buoyed by Van Nistelrooy’s appointment but it’s evident that there is work to be done ahead of his first game in charge on Tuesday against West Ham United.

Gary Lineker excited by Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City appointment

While his Rest of Football compatriots Alan Shearer and Micah Richards felt Cooper’s sacking was harsh, Lineker seems to have moved on and is looking forward to the new era at the King Power Stadium.

The Leicester legend discussed Van Nistelrooy’s appointment on Match of the Day and as pundit Danny Murphy admitted he was “excited” to see what the Premier League icon can do, he asked Lineker the same.

Replying to Murphy, Lineker said: “Excited. Well, I am.”

Murphy then jokingly claimed that Lineker needed all the excitement he could get after watching his side suffer an embarrassing defeat on the road.

Ruud van Nistelrooy to meet Leicester squad today

Work now begins for Van Nistelrooy as he takes the reins.

Despite being appointed on Friday it was decided that the trio of coaches, led by Ben Dawson, should take charge having worked with the squad all week.

Dawson, Van Nistelrooy and the rest of the coaching and playing staff will meet at the Seagrave training centre where preparations will begin.

Asked if he had spoken to the 48-year-old before the game, caretaker boss Dawson said: No, there was just the message last night when the appointment was made. He wished everybody good luck.

“The plan will be to catch up tomorrow at the training ground. (The meeting) will be whatever the new manager thinks. It was already scheduled that we’d be in tomorrow morning with the quick turnaround to Tuesday night.

“We had had a meeting planned anyway, if no appointment had been made, so we could review the game and look forward to Tuesday night. It will be up to the new manager how he uses that time.”
