Leicester City must strike fast on ‘genius’ Steve Cooper replacement amid Erik Ten Hag sack worry

It is fair to say that Leicester City fans are yet to be convinced by Steve Cooper since he replaced Enzo Maresca in the summer.

When Enzo Maresca left for Chelsea, Leicester City did not have an abundance of options as his replacement with the precarious financial position of the club unattractive for many.

Eventually, Steve Cooper was appointed but it was divisive decision due to his association with rivals Nottingham Forest and many perceiving his tactics as negative.

The fact Leicester are yet to win a game in the Premier League this season has done little to change this opinion but supporters should be slightly more optimistic after their side came so close to taking a point away at Arsenal on Saturday.

Cooper’s side went 2-0 down before a James Justin brace dragged Leicester back to 2-2. However, it was late heartbreak as Arsenal scored twice in second-half stoppage time to steal the points.

Leicester City may have to act now to appoint Graham Potter

Leicester showed a fight against Arsenal that had not been apparent in the draws against Everton and Walsall in the week leading up to the trip to the Emirates.

Cooper still finds himself in a precarious position, though, and Leicester may have to act swiftly to save their season.

Graham Potter was Leicester’s first choice to replace Maresca in the summer but the ex-Chelsea manager was unsure on taking over at a club who it was assumed would get a points deduction and he was also thought to be holding out for the England job.

Now that looks increasingly unlikely, Leicester could swoop to appoint Potter if they decide to sack Cooper but may have to do it very soon with the Manchester United job potentially set to become available.

That is because Erik ten Hag endured yet another difficult day as United manager as his side lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in a dismal display on Sunday and the Red Devils’ owners INEOS are known to be admirers of Potter.

Leicester are on three points after six matches and find themselves out of the relegation on goal difference.

The first league win under Cooper remains elusive and the home game against Bournemouth next weekend could well decide Cooper’s fate.

However, they may not have time to wait if they are to appoint Potter and there may not be many chances to secure a manager of the former Brighton manager’s calibre.

Potter’s reputation has undoubtedly taken a hit after a difficult spell at Chelsea but he is still a very impressive coach and was labelled a “genius” by an unnamed Swansea City player speaking to The Athletic in 2020.

Potter’s history of developing players alongside his tactical nous and attractive football would likely make him a very welcome appointment at the King Power and get the Foxes faithful really behind their team this season.
