The Leicester City midfielder’s future may be in doubt after Wilfred Ndidi committed his future to the club.

Steve Cooper had the predicament of a threadbare midfield ahead of the new Premier League campaign after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall signed for Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea.

However, he has looked towards the transfer market where he has shown interest in Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley, who is reportedly available for £50m.

Former Coventry City midfielder Callum O’Hare is also of interest to Cooper after his release from the Championship club this summer.

There were concerns at one point that Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi would move on after the expiration of his contract, however the 27-year-old has committed his future to the club after signing a new deal.

Ndidi will be crucial for Cooper’s plans ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, however it could spell bad news for one midfielder whose future is in doubt at the club.

Steve Cooper must decide whether to keep Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury

Leicester City midfielder Ndidi signing a new contract at the club means that Cooper now has several options at his disposal in the centre of the park next season, including former Chelsea midfielder Michael Golding, who was signed earlier this summer.

Cooper may have to make difficult decisions on players in the squad, including the likes of Hamza Choudhury.

Choudhury was handed 15 starts last season, predominantly utilised at right-back as a result of the lack of depth in the position during the Championship campaign.

The last time Leicester City were in the Premier League in the 2022/23 campaign, the Englishman was loaned out to Watford in the Championship.

Is Hamza Choudhury’s versatility a reason to keep him at Leicester City

Although he got fairly limited gametime during the 2023/24 campaign for Leicester City, he was crucial at slotting in at various positions when called upon.

At Championship level, he did make a difference at times, especially when the Foxes were hit with injuries, however the fact that Leicester City had previously deemed the midfielder not good enough for the Premier League after sanctioning a loan move to Watford, it wouldn’t be out of the realms of possibility that Cooper makes a similar decision.

Alternatively, it might be a case that Choudhury makes the decision to move on after very limited gametime across his entire spell with the Foxes, being handed just 25 Premier League starts across five seasons.

He endured a more positive spell under Maresca, with the Italian boss suggesting that the 26-year-old is ‘very good’ after their 2-1 home victory last season against West Brom.

Cooper will have to make his mind up quickly on the midfielder, who will be keen to move on if the former Nottingham Forest boss deems him surplus to requirements.
