‘Rudkin out’… Leicester City fans left seething as club refuse to pay £7m for key transfer target

Leicester City supporters have had to wait patiently for action in the January transfer window but their first signing is on the horizon.

In a week that could see Leicester City face a points deduction for breaching PSR, positive movement is expected in the window.

Leicester have agreed a £2.5m deal for Woyo Coulibaly, Parma’s 25-year-old right-back who could become Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first capture of the month.

Coulibaly addresses a huge problem area for the Dutchman, providing quality competition for the much-maligned James Justin at right-back.

However, supporters have been left annoyed by the club’s failure to sign a Premier League-proven player for a bargain price.

Leicester City fans react to Kyle Walker-Peters transfer refusal

In their search for a new full-back to replace Justin, Leicester were transfer-linked with Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.

It’s a rumour that no doubt excited the fans as Walker-Peters has been compared to Philipp Lahm by former boss Ralph Hasenhuttl due to his brilliant versatility.

The Englishman, who has appeared 133 times in the Premier League for Tottenham and the Saints, was seen as the perfect upgrade at full-back.

However, when Ben Jacobs broke the news that Leicester refused to pay £7m for Walker-Peters on Monday, fans were annoyed by this update, voicing their concerns on X.

One supporter aimed his anger towards the under-fire Director of Football Jon Rudkin, writing: “This tells us how seriously the powers-that-be are to dodge the drop.

“KWP knows his way around this league and would’ve been better value than Skipp, Ayew or others. But having blown millions on duds, Rudkin and co. are now looking at cheap options. #RudkinOut #LCFC.”

“7 mil for KWP would’ve been class imo but hopefully Coulibaly does well at least he’s versatile as well,” another replied.

“Can’t even afford £7m. Club is dead,” a fourth responded.

“£7 million for Walker-peters is a bargain. We are broke,” a fifth admitted.

“Odd. KWP at his best I’d expect to be substantially better, but clearly we’re skint (again),” a sixth replied.

Why Walker-Peters to Leicester was always unlikely

It’s clear to see why fans are annoyed Leicester didn’t cough up £7 million to sign the former England under-21 international.

The main reason why they perhaps refused is because Walker-Peters sees his contract at St Mary’s expire in the summer, meaning clubs could sign him for free.

There is a huge argument to suggest that Leicester should pay a low fee now instead of risking him joining a rival club, although a transfer was never going to be simple in any case.

In the fight against relegation, Southampton may be down and out already after accumulating just six points this term.

However, it’s unrealistic that they let him leave for a rival club at the bottom of the table, especially in the January transfer window.

They’re also holding out hope that Walker-Peters will renew his contract after they opened a fresh round of talks.

That being said, he is likely to leave on a free transfer in the summer as opposed to being sold in January, with Leicester potentially missing out on a bargain.
